Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for highly-rated youngster Joao Neves. The 19-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Benfica and representing Portugal at the 2024 UEFA Euros, has attracted attention from several top clubs. Alongside Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich are all monitoring Neves.

Mikel Arteta is aiming to bolster his midfield for the upcoming season by signing a number eight or a number six. In his preferred midfield trio, Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard have solidified their spots, leaving one position vacant. Arsenal are expected to undergo a midfield clear-out this summer, with Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe, and Albert Sambi Lokonga all rumored to be departing the club.

While several options have been considered, the Gunners are also in the market for a striker, which has led to reports of Kai Havertz potentially dropping deeper to play as the third midfielder. Martin Zubimendi is another transfer target for the midfield position and remains on Arsenal’s list.

Joao Neves made his senior team debut in the final months of the 2022-23 Primeira Liga season and has since become an integral member of the Benfica starting eleven. In only his second year of senior football, Neves has dazzled Europe with his performances. He made 55 appearances in all competitions for Benfica and won five Primeira Liga Midfielder of the Month awards, eventually being named in the league’s Team of the Season.

Neves is a well-rounded midfielder, known for his technical prowess, close control, and passing skills. His work ethic and tackling abilities also make him a strong defensive player. Above all, the Portuguese youngster has been praised for his composure and maturity at such a young age.

While Neves’ technical attributes make him a good fit for Arsenal, securing his transfer to North London will be challenging. Benfica reportedly want at least £100 million for their star midfielder. The Gunners are unlikely to pay such a high fee and will attempt to negotiate a lower price for the talented youngster.
