Arsenal are liked with a move for Gent forward Jonathan David for sometime now, and the Gunners are ‘sniffing a bit harder’ to land the Canadian, according to reports by Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.
Its said that Arsenal have been following the 20-year-old ‘for months’ and have already initiated talks with his agent, Nick Mavromaras. HLN state that alongside Arsenal, many of his potential suitors contacted his agent to get details about his availability.
Jonathan David has had an impressive season at Gent, scoring 23 goals and laying off 10 assists in forty appearances in all competitions.
Despite the financial crisis due to the global health crisis, Gent general manager Michel Louwagie has already stressed that €25 million will not prove sufficient to urge David away from the club.
And according to the report, Gent has not received any proposals from Arsenal or any other suitors so far.
Although David did admit over his wants to continue his further development in Bundesliga which will prove a major blow for all the European elites after his services.
“I never knew big clubs would be interested in me so early. It’s overwhelming, but I think I can make the next step,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s time for me to move and go somewhere where I can keep developing and get to the potential that I have.
“The league that would suit me the most right now is the Bundesliga. It’s similar to the Belgian league in terms of the tempo and the physicality, but obviously the quality is higher in Germany and there is more competition.”
With Arteta looking to build a young and energetic side, Jonathan David could serve the perfect legs to lead upfront alongside he likes of Nicolas Pepe, Reiss Nelson, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
But would Arsenal splash in excess of twenty-five million euros for a twenty year old? – I don’t see that coming!
