Arsenal transfer target Ivan Toney has been left out of Brentford’s squad for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.
The striker has been linked with a move to North London for the past two years, but recent reports suggest interest from Saudi Pro League sides, with Al Ahli reportedly preparing a bid. Chelsea and Manchester United have also had Toney on their shortlists in the past.
Ivan Toney omitted from Brentford squad
Brentford manager Thomas Frank admitted that the 28-year-old’s absence was due to ongoing transfer speculation.
“There’s a lot of things going on with Ivan, and there’s some transfer interest. Because of all that, we decided not to involve him in the squad,” Frank explained. “It’s the classic situation – I couldn’t say too much the day before. He’s been a fantastic player for us, but we showed last year that we can manage without him.”
When asked if Toney would be leaving this season, Frank remained non-committal, stating, “Who knows? There’s interest, but nothing is close.”
Toney began his career at Northampton Town, making his senior debut for the League One club in 2021. He signed for Newcastle United in 2015 but only made two league appearances for The Magpies, spending much of his time on loan at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, and Wigan Athletic.
In 2018, League One side Peterborough United signed Toney, where he enjoyed two excellent seasons, scoring 40 goals in 76 league appearances. This impressive form caught Brentford’s eye, and they signed the forward for a reported £15 million. Toney netted 31 league goals in his first season with Brentford, helping the Bees secure promotion to the Premier League.
Could Eddie Nketiah replace Toney at Brentford?
Toney has continued his success in the Premier League, scoring 36 goals over three years, including a standout 20-goal season in 2022. Arsenal have long been interested in acquiring a striker, and while Kai Havertz is performing well up front, Mikel Arteta may consider a move for Toney if Brentford make him available.
Alternatively, if Toney does end up going to the Saudi Pro League, his departure may end up paving a move for Eddie Nketiah. The Arsenal academy graduate reportedly does not have a future at the Emirates Stadium and his proposed move to Marseille also broke down a few weeks ago. Needing a quality striker to lead the line, The Bees may turn their attention to Nketiah who will be available for around £35 million.
