Arsenal could test Brentford’s resolve with €40 million bid for key midfielder

Damsgaard-Arsenal

Arsenal could make a surprise move for Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard in the ongoing transfer window as the Danish midfielder has caught the eye of the hierarchy in north London. As per reports from Fichajes, Mikel Arteta has noticed Damsgaard’s progress under Thomas Frank and considers the player an important piece for the evolution of their existing squad.

Despite having several options in midfield including the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey and Jorginho, it seems the Gunners are keeping one eye on the future as they close-in on a potential move for the Dane. Damsgaard is currently in the midst of a remarkable season for the Bees, scoring three goals and assisting seven in 24 appearances across competitions.

Having joined Brentford in August 2022 on a five-year deal, he is now reaching the mid-point of his existing contract. Aged 24, this could be a good time for the player to seek new challenges to progress his career. However, the club are likely to stand firm with their monetary demands for the midfielder.

Damsgaard has been impressive this season as he has been deployed in a slightly more advanced role compared to last season. This has allowed him to get forward more often and be among the goals for his team, as seen with his 10 contributions already this season. His playing style is very similar to that of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, with the Dane potentially being seen as a back-up for the Norwegian.

Having played a major role in his development in the last two years, the Bees are likely to hold out for a fee upwards of €40 million for their prized asset. Additionally, they will not be keen on losing one of their most important players in the middle of the season, which could force Arsenal to wait it out until the summer to make a move.

While Brentford are a well-managed and well-coached team under Frank, a move to the Gunners could signify a major leap in Damsgaard’s career, as he will get the opportunity to regularly play in the Champions League and also challenge for the Premier League title.
