Denis Suarez asked ‘a lot of money’ to complete move to Arsenal this month

The claims in media over a potential move for Denis Suarez to Arsenal are getting slower and slower.

There was a stage where the deal looked about done and just ‘Yet to be announced’, it would have been a loan move for the rest of the season for a fee believed to be around €2m, with Arsenal having an option to sign him permanently in the summer.

Agreeing a deal with Barcelona was something of a success, as the Catalans initially wanted a straight forward transfer for a fee around €15-20m – although with time it became clear Arsenal couldn’t be able to initiate that and the next step was a loan deal with a redemption obligation.

Arsenal were not ready to commit permanency for the summer, hence there was only loan option.

However, Barca wanted Denis to extend his contract so his value would be protected if Arsenal went against the option in the summer. He was offered a ‘modest’ pay rise but knocked it with Catalan newspaper Sport writing, he asked for ‘a lot of money’ to renew, and in-turn everything ‘stalled’.

“Denis Suarez is still stuck. The Barca gives him the green light to go on loan to Arsenal whenever (contract) renewed for two more seasons at a price not much higher than what is currently perceived. Denis has asked for a lot of money and everything has been staked. Arsenal has begun negotiations with the inter to finalize the assignment of Perisic. They prefer Denis, but they will not wait too long to sign.”

Sport believe Arsenal are moving on to other targets, with Christopher Nkunku and Ivan Perisic rumours.
