Arsenal full-back Riccardo Calafiori is set to be sidelined for several weeks after sustaining an injury to his right knee in the UEFA Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old felt awkwardly on his knee and was evaluated by the medical team on the field. He carried on but soon waved at Mikel Arteta, signalling the boss to take him off in the 66th minute of the game.

The Spanish manager was asked about the Italian sensation’s fitness on the recent pre-match interview, and he gave a rather concerning update, saying:

He needs some more tests. Yesterday he had some, today he’s going to have some more. From there, we will know, because last time as well, we thought it was really bad & he ended up playing two days after. Let’s see.”

Calafiori underwent scans on Wednesday, but the Gunners didn’t confirm his status. Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport also claimed that his injury is not as serious as initially expected. But the fans were still waiting for a more accurate update on the former Bologna star.

The Mirror has now revealed that the versatile star will be out for a few weeks due to minor damage to his medial collateral ligament. He will certainly miss Arsenal’s next Premier League game against Liverpool.

Arteta will not be happy to lose such an important defensive asset in a game that holds great value in the race to the top.

Calafiori could also miss the Carabao Cup match vs Preston End, the UCL tie against Inter Milan, and the Premier League games vs. Newcastle United and Chelsea. We expect the Italian left-back to return only after the mid-November international break.

As the North London club navigates their upcoming fixtures, they also have to keep in mind the injury problems ongoing in the squad.

Key players like Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber, and Bukayo Saka remain doubtful for the Reds encounter. Meanwhile, William Saliba’s red card incident vs. Bournemouth will keep him suspended this weekend.

Liverpool are also facing injury issues of their own, but their main starting XI players are playing really well under Arne Slot and have shown little signs of fatigue.

Arsenal’s bench strength will be tested once again, and they need a positive result to close the gap between them and the Reds. Losing valuable points will affect their title aspirations this season.
