Transfer exit stalled for midfielder involved vs Betis as clubs remain €10m apart on the fee

Hamburg SV are working to bring Fábio Vieira back to the club after a loan spell last season, but Arsenal and the Bundesliga side remain roughly €10 million apart on a valuation for the midfielder, with Monday’s edition of Bild dismissing recent claims of an agreement as “fake news.”

The 26-year-old returned to the Emirates after Hamburg opted not to exercise their €22 million purchase clause at the end of the loan. His contract with Arsenal runs until 2027, and Transfermarkt currently values him at €18 million.

On July 22, Hamburg chief financial officer Eric Huwer confirmed the club had made an offer for the player, saying: “We’re naturally very curious to see whether he and Arsenal will accept it. We fell a little bit in love with Fábio last year, but we’re not going to be unreasonable. If Arsenal says yes, we’ll be happy to have Fábio; if they say no, we’ll be happy to have someone else.”

The latest rumours suggested an agreement had already been reached between the two clubs, but Bild’s Monday edition firmly rejected that idea, stating there is no deal in place and that the two sides remain far apart on the numbers. According to the report, Hamburg plan to sign the attacking midfielder for around €8-9 million, while Arsenal have indicated they would lower their original €22 million purchase clause valuation to €18 million.

In short, the Premier League champions want roughly €10 million more than Hamburg currently intend to offer.

Vieira has spent the last two seasons out on loan and is unlikely to feature in Mikel Arteta’s core plans for next season.

With his contract expiring in 2027, both club and player are looking to part ways permanently this summer, and clarity over his future is expected to emerge towards the end of the transfer window. Whether he returns to Hamburg largely depends on whether a more convincing offer materialises from elsewhere in the coming weeks. If nothing else emerges, it could ultimately hand Hamburg the leverage to sign him for a lower fee than they are currently offering.

Bild summarised the situation directly: “One thing is clear: HSV’s management wants to finalise the Vieira deal. However, it’s equally clear that there’s still a long way to go. The transfer will only go through if Arsenal offers another 50% discount.”
